Buying a Mobile Phone |
These gizmos just get smaller and smaller and pack so many additional features that your mobile phone of six months ago is already a dinosaur. We put across a couple of warm-up questions to our Consumer Electronics Expert, Ranjan. If you are planning to purchase a mobile phone, music system or a television, clarify your doubts with the expert.
What does buying a mobile phone have to do with deciding on a calling plan?
Calling plans are available in Europe/US as there are several private operators competing for business. Sometimes these operators offer deals on some specific mobile ie. Samsung SGH N100 for 20pounds if you take a Orange 6 month calling plan. In this part of the world the GSM operators are mainly government companies which either offer you a regular GSM subscription or allow you to buy a pre-paid card which you can load with call time if required. Many operators such as Etisalat do not offer mobiles for sale.
What are the must-have features and what are the basic questions you have to ask yourself before buying a mobile phone?
This is largely linked to personal usuage and choices. Features important to one person may not be so to another. As for what the person ought to look for, it depends upon what you use it for. Infra-red connection is good if you are a heavy data
user ie. needing PC connectivity. However, for most users, voice is all mobiles are used for and for some it is used to make a fashion and prestige statement.
Good looks, compact sizes, blue screens, large phone directory, great ring tones, ease of menu, good signal strength and voice dialling (portable handfree while driving) are good to have. For the young user they may look for fast email or SMS with T9,
downloadable pictures or ring tones now available with almost all major manufacturers.
Bigger the screen the better it is. Or is it?
Screen sizes are largely a function of the phone sizes. Compact phones will have smaller screens compared to large phones. However, variable font size especially for numbers is the key to readability. Although if you are a heavy email/sms user, the
number of lines on the screen could be of interest. Phones are now available with upto 10 lines capability. An important development is the introduction of blue screens. These really make it easy to see in darker rooms or at night besides being really cool. Next year will see the introduction of color LCD screens in mobiles!
What are the advanced features that are available in the market?
New phones with upto 16 polyphonic sound which almost sounds true to life are now coming on the market. These will make quite a few heads turn around. Phones with dual screens one outside and another inside are an innovation allowing you to see who's calling, and reject or accepy without
opening a folder type phone. Different color flashing signal indicators let
you know visually that a call is coming on silent mode and from which caller group, ie. wife, office etc.
Phones with built in MP3 players were introduced some time ago but were not popular. New products with enhanced, easy to use keypads for messaging and MP3 have arrived which may appeal to the young users. Phones with digital cameras are also around the corner. GPRS to be launched by Etisalat in November will allow fast data transmissions making
WAP more attractive for business-usage.
Any cool phone accessories that we should look for?
A whole range of accessories are available from necklace holders, wrist strap holders, stickers, name beads, covers, antennas, belt holders etc.
