Our Interview with Senior VP Mr. Jaewhan Lee

Apart from Arabian Travel Market participation, Korea Tourism Organization also held incredible Roadshow in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. 19 start-ups participated in the K-Tourism startups IR. 

 

In Dubai, the roadshow took place at Dubai Festival City Mall on May 5-6, 2023. Here the visitors got to experience and get closer to korean culture that includes; Korean Food, Hanbok (Korean Clothing), experience beauty and unique K-Spa JJIMJILBANG (Korean Sauna) Experience and family movie screening.

 

Mr. Lee Jaewhan the senior Vice President of Korea Tourism Organization also present at the Dubai Festival City Mall.

 

On May 4, Korea Tourism Organization held a Gala Dinner at Address Sky View, where travel represenative of Domestic and Intenational agencies were present. 

The Gala Dinner was started with amazing performance by Hangul Calligraphy performance and Chosun Pop by sEODo band.

Followed by congratulatory speeches;

  • Mr. Kim Sang Ug, Director General of Tourism Industry Policy Bureau
  • Mr. Byung-Jun Moon, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Dubai

 

Beautiful presentation about general tourism in Korea and Tourism Ventures, K-Wellness and Tourism Hub Cities in South Korea was shown, also nomination of PTS (Private Travel Seller) and K-Travel Juniors was held.

 

Few questions that we asked Mr. Jaewhan Lee are as follows;

Q: Can you provide some examples of successful Korean startups that have already entered UAE market? And please tell us about how they achieved their goals?

A: H2O Hospitality, the largest hospitality tech company in Korea and Japan, has been preparing to expand to the UAE market since last year. 

H2O was able to successfully enter the UAE market through signing POC (proof of concept) contracts with the main hotel chains in the UAE. H2O is targeting to launch the UAE version of H2O flow which will include D2C (direct to customer) and CDP (customer data platform) solutions for the hotels and resorts by September this year.

H2O has been solving two major problems that hotels have: inefficient hotel operation value chain and extreme depency upon OTA volumes. Through H2O many hotels in Korea and Japan have been automating internal operational processes and also able to bring the data control from the OTAs to themselves resulting in larger direct booking volumes. Hotels in the UAE market have very similar issues and H2O was able to  allow hotels to solve those issues through H2O.

Q: What results is Korea tourism industry showing after the endemic in 2022

A: The number of foreign tourists visiting Korea reached a record high of 17.5 million in 2019, prior to the COVID‐19 pandemic. However, due to travel restrictions, the number decreased by approximately 95% to 967,000 in 2021 compared to 2019. [Direct translation of the video] There is a culture in Korea. While there are many tourists who visit Korea through Online Tourism Agency (OTA), WTO has shifted its focus to work together with local tourism companies to understand the interests of local tourists visiting Korea and then develop customized tourism products (packages) for these tourists. This kind of customized approach and collaboration with local tourism companies goes beyond UAE and is the approach KTO is taking in the global market. WTO will continue to exchange information with these companies and support one another to offer better services and products to the travelers visiting Korea.
