As the riders entered the second hour of racing, Pogačar immediately launched the attack together with Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal), recovering the small gap from the fleeing group and taking the lead in the race.
Shortly after it was the turn of Formolo who, together with four other riders, joined his Slovenian teammate forming the new group leading the race for the last 90km.
In the race characterised by rain, bad luck struck for the Emirati team, with Pogačar slowed down by a puncture in an important phase of the race.

Dubai - October 06, 2021: Hamdan Sports Complex, one of the world’s most iconic sports arenas, will take centrestage next month when its hosts yet another top international event – the 25th Karate World Championships from November 16 to 21.
With more than 1,800 athletes expected in Dubai for the event, alongside over 1,200 delegates, team officials and technical staff, the 25th Karate World Championships will be the biggest ever in history in terms participation. Dubai, 6 October 2021: The final phase of the qualifications rounds for the 22nd edition of the Fazza Championship for Youlah, and the 17th edition of Al Meydan program, will be held on 7, 8 and 9 October, from 6pm onwards, at Al Meydan Fort in Dubai’s Global Village, the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC) has announced on Tuesday.
Youlah is a UAE heritage sport, which is a traditional performance involving the use of a rifle as a prop, and an integral part of Emirati culture. Alessandro Covi put in another fine display of late-season form, taking 2nd place under treacherous conditions at the Coppa Bernocchi today in Legnano, Italy.
The 22 year-old went clear in an elite six rider group which developed after 50km of racing. This group would build a gap of over 5 minutes and collaborated well under the pouring rain to stay clear, with Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quickstep) proving the strongest.
